Dear all,

We have exciting news! We are organizing a workshop on the Meanings of Nature in East and South-East Asia. This project aims to show the high diversity of conceptions of “nature” (and therefore of conceptions of humans) in East Asia and South-East Asia.

Please find the invitation with the details here. To facilitate the discussions during the workshop, we would like to collect draft contributions in advance. If you are interested in contributing and if you have any question, concern or suggestion, please send us an email as soon as possible (asiaenviphilo@gmail.com), and we will be in touch.

Outputs:

• Get to know each other, encourage collaboration, and develop NAEP.
• Online workshop around July 21-31. Fill up the doodle by June 20th!
• Publish a co-authored peer-reviewed paper with the results of the contributions and discussions.
• Feature each contribution on NAEP’s website.

• By April 1st: Applications for the Mind & Life Summer Research Institute 2021, online, are open (scholarships are available)

This time, we travel to Mongolia. In Mongolian, “nature” can be expressed as “baigali” (Байгаль, ᠪᠠᠶᠢᠭᠠᠯᠢ), echoing the name of Lake Baikal.

If you want to share your stories about the worldviews of nature, please feel free to contact us. Texts can be short and the format is free.

Did you know that in the Philippines, animals are sometimes considered as the gods’ pets? Thanks Mira Reyes for her inspiring short article about environmental thought in the Philippines.

We are still looking for short presentations about the state of environmental philosophy in each country/culture. Please let us know if you are interested in writing a short summary about environmental philosophy in your country (about 500 words or less)

If you are have some information to share with the network (events, new publications, conferences, call for paper, etc.), let us know! We will share it on our website, mailing list and Facebook page.

Upcoming:
– Call for Papers “Towards Climate Justice: Eco-Strategies for Survival” by March 31st 2020.
– Some of our members will speak about environmental justice at the Annual Conference on Asian Criminology Society, October 2-5 2020 in Kyoto, Japan.
– The Conference of Asian Contemporary Philosophy will be held in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), on Sept. 1-3 2020. Some talks will also approach Asian environmental philosophy. The Call for Paper should come soon.

We are developing a Network for Asian Environmental Philosophy, to facilitate exchanges between scholars, and to make their work more visible. Our primary goal is to support works related to environmental philosophy within Asian traditions of thoughts broadly conceived or related to grassroots perspectives on environmental issues in Asia. We want to provide a platform to foster communication and exchanges between people working in Asian environmental philosophy.

Would you be interested in joining us?

We plan to create a mailing list to share with each other new publications and events related to Asian Environmental Philosophy. If you agree, we would also like to add your name, interests and publications on the website (www.asiaenviphilo.com), so that other scholars can find you easily.

The network is fully non-profit and based on volunteer work by some members. We use English as communication language, but we are very happy to include your publications in other languages.
