Warning: SCAM emails have been circulating

Our members have been receiving SCAM emails in the name of our coordinator, Orika Komatsubara.

After the initial request for payment, the senders ask for a wire transfer. These emails are sent from deceptive email addresses that include the name of the network. 

The Network of Asian Environmental Philosophy (NAEP) never asks for money transfers. We are a non-profit organized exclusively by volunteers and all our activities are free.

Please be cautious, and do not respond to suspicious emails!

Call for Papers: NAEP 2026 Online Symposium

The 2026 Online Symposium of the Network of Asian Environmental Philosophy

Theme 2026: Mud, Islands and Ocean

Dates: November 5 (Thu) – 6 (Fri), 2026             No conference fee, participation is free.

Mud, islands and ocean are places of mixture and changes. Animals and people leave traces in the mud. The NAEP symposium 2026 dives into blue humanities and interrogates the fringes between worlds and aims to explore views in terms of fluidity and process. In the mud, soil and water shift forms and transform. Boundaries are not clearly apparent. Environmental philosophy forces us to reconsider certain assumptions about clear boundaries delimiting and isolating things, and mud invites us to this journey.

Oceans can be places of both encounters and separations, and  islands can easily trigger narratives of isolation. Mud involves and interconnects lands and seas. Mud also hosts specific ecosystems and bridges the worlds of different species. But places of mixtures and changes can also be places of tensions; the encounter between different worlds can unleash clashes about access and belonging. Many struggles about justice unfold in muddy waters.

The NAEP 2026 Online Symposium welcomes contributions from scholars, practitioners and stakeholders on a broad range of aspects within Asian worldviews, including but not limited to:

  • Silt, sand and shells, changing materialities and temporalities
  • Philosophies of microbiology and oceanology
  • Sea-faring people, slow living, Indigenous and local knowledge (ILK) and practices
  • Justice and radical approaches to transformation
  • Mangroves and coastal ecosystems as protectors from climate change
  • Sea level rise and the futures of islands
  • Ecofeminism insights on water and birth
  • Philosophical explorations about natural boundaries, artificial delimitations, holism and animism
  • Whale songs and artistic expressions (narratives, artforms, storytelling, memory landscape…) related to mud, islands and ocean in Asian cultures

Early- and mid-career scholars are especially encouraged to send proposals.

We welcome abstracts for individual presentations, panels, online posters and workshop proposals. Please submit your 200-250 words abstract with your name, affiliation and contact information through this form, by August 16th, 2026 (or by email to asiaenviphilo@gmail.com).

Language: The primary language of the conference is English. We aim to be non-native friendly, so we make it a rule that we speak slow and accessible English. If you would like to present in a language other than English, please contact us.

Thank you! Synthesis of the 2025 Symposium of the Network of Asian Environmental Philosophy

The Online Symposium of the Network of Asian Environmental Philosophy 2025 took place on November 6-7th. The 2025 symposium took place under the theme: “Life as Regeneration & Flourishing in Environmental Philosophies in Asia”. The limits of life often correspond to fascinating fringes in environmental philosophy, such as the blurry borders between life and non-life, which sometimes encompasses dimensions of regeneration, purification or cleansing, toxicity, and rebirth. For two days, over 100 registered participants and about 28 presenters and moderators explored questions of animism, regeneration and healing among environmental philosophies in Asia, including views from Myanmar, Philippines, India, Indonesia, China and Japan. Members of the organization team mainly based in India and Japan and The Philippines served as moderators.

Thank you! Synthesis of the NAEP 2024 Symposium

The 2024 symposium of the Network of Asian Environmental Philosophy took place online on November 21-22, 2024, under the theme “Rivers and Mountains in Asian Environmental Philosophies”. It gathered eighteen presenters and discussants with stories from China, Myanmar, India, Vietnam, Japan and Pakistan, as well as an audience of over 110 registered participants (between 10-27 participants in each session). Members of the organization team mainly from India, Japan and The Philippines served as moderators.

Thank you! Synthesis of the 2023 NAEP online symposium

The theme of “Plants & animals in the environmental philosophies of Asia” framed the 2023 Online Symposium of the Network of Asian Environmental Philosophy that took place on November 2-3, 2023. We discovered the work of 19 presenters, most of them new to the network, working on diverse regions and traditions in Asia, from Indonesia to China. Over 160 participants registered to the zoom, and around 20-30 people participated in each session. Presentations from diverse regions in Asia made us explore various perspectives on plants and species, ranging from philosophy to law and activism.

NAEP 2023 CfP available in Japanese and Vietnamese

Dear all,
